Daybreak by Mark Smith-Soto: Book Release and Celebration

Please join us for an afternoon of poetry from Mark Smith-Soto's final book, "Daybreak." Poems from "Daybreak" will be presented by John Picard, Deborah Bell, Lyn Labell, Mercer Bufter, Manuel Colón, and Alan Smith Soto. Copies of "Daybreak" will be available and light refreshments will be served after the reading.
 
MARK SMITH-SOTO (1948–2023) was born in Washington, DC, and lived in Costa Rica until the age of 10, when his family returned to his and his father’s native city. He tasted and savored poetry from an early age in a bilingual family. He is the author of four full-length poetry collections and three award-winning chapbooks. His awards include a fellowship in creative writing from the National Endowment for the Arts. He won North Carolina Writers Network’s Persephone Competition for his chapbook Green Mango Collage (2000), as well as its Randall Jarrell–Harperprints Poetry Competition for the chapbook Shafts (2001). Most recently, Mark was the winner of the 2023 Guy Owen Prize.
